Can Guido catch up in the hanging e-petition race?

August 15th, 2011

Will he get the required 100,000 by February?

As I’m sure we all know Guid is running a campaign to get capital punishment restored for certain cases of serious murder and he’s set up a petition on the Number 10 e-petitions site.

If the total reach the threshold of 100,000 within six months then it becomes eligible to be debated in the commons.

His move has received a fair bit of attention in the media and also prompted a rival petition from those wanting the current ban on capital punishment to be retained. These have only been up for 11 days but so far those against hanging are winning by quite a margin.

Will that change in the coming months?

Even though what polls there have been on the subject say most people want capital punishment to be restored it’s quite a challenge getting them to put their names down and go through the verification process.

The gap has closed a little over the past few days but there’s quite a big margin for Guido’s backers to surmount.

200 – The Times says that won’t be enough, he won’t get the security clearance (unless the government passes a new law)

That is precisely the instructional model that Heinlein ascribes to Colonel Dubois in “Starship Troopers”!

Very useful in the case of an Arachnid attack (and, of course, originally developed in “Aberdeen, Scotland”!)

152, Carola – no accounting for taste, that’s for sure! Just that it and crime are almost always on a hand-shaking basis.

I think Ed Miliband played his hand REALLY BADLY today.

He should have said that he would wait to see what the Govt. proposed. And then make constructive criticism.

He can’t credibly say that the Govt. has made only knee-jerk proposals – then make none himself. People want some action.

And the idea that he would set up an inquiry if the Govt. didn’t was risible. Someone should tell him he is no longer in Govt.

      Tw@.

Possibly….. so check out these graphs. Bare in mind in 1979 the country was again bankrupt after years of Labour government who then had to go to the IMF cap in hand. The outcome can be seen in the graphs which was very much like we see with Greece today except this time a change in policy we hope has avoided this sitaution which was too late to enact in 79′. In 79′ The problem was created by the Labour government and had to be solved by the Tories while Labour aided and abetted by the Unions created as many problems as possible.

Something like that takes a generation to overcome (and pay off) however this time Labour have ensured it will take more than a just a single generation if we can recover at all.

There are going to be casualties in this as we were the last time and Labour have already started the normal blame game. It is sad but an inevitable consequence of a Labour government that they always end in tears, unemployment higher and rising rapidly and no money left in the bank. They then always blame everyone else for the outcomes and the subsequent blight on the country.

      Sea Shanty Irish @23:

Tim B, in the interests of full disclosure, are you now or have you ever been or are you ever intending, to be a paid (even in vats of greenish salty liquid) spokesperson for Gatoraid and/or PepsiCo?

It’s GATORADE, and it’s much better than Powerade, Coke’s equivalent.

I know this because the PGA Championship has Pepsi as a sponsor. Next month one tournament that I always work changed its name this summer to “The Tour Championship by Coca Cola”.

Having said that, Pepsi initially said that marshals couldn’t use the tee coolers at the PGA to get water and Gatorade. Faced with a revolt in 95+ temperatures, they backed down.

Coke is quite happy for marshals to use the tee barrels to hydrate, and replenish every 15 minutes.

As an Atlantan, I obviously support my home town’s most famous trade mark

considering Mr Woods’s career trajectory at the moment, don’t you reckon NOW is the time to get Sports Illustrated or National Enquirer or National Review interested in your shocking expose:

      “I Washed Tiger Woods’s Balls . . . And I’m Proud I Did!!!”

I asked an SI photographer I know to get a good shot of me when Phil was teeing up.

He sent me a photo of me watching Phil take a swig and practice swings.

Don’t know what this case is all about, perhaps TimB knows something?

It’s just another death penalty case here – he did the crime, he should suffer the punishment – is the general view. Don’t bother me with details.

If however you want to know more about it, it is a very troubling case.
