It has been said many times before that the one thing that is a big turn-off for voters is for a party to appear divided.
This arguably has a much greater impact on electoral outcomes than a particular stance on a specific issue.

So the big danger for the Tories in the same sex marriage Commons vote today is that a big split will add to “the party is divided narrative.”
A challenge for Cameron and his team is that many from the 2010 intake seem ready to join rebellions and speak their minds. This is not helped by the limited number of goodies that Number 10 can hand out because of the coalition.
At the end of the day the Tories failed to win the 2010 election. If the party was sensbible then they’d be getting behind the leadership instead, as it appears, finding new areas where they can rebel.
